The Elviros Cervical Pillow is a specially designed premium memory foam pillow for alleviating neck and back pain. It can also help users achieve higher quality sleep, which in turn will help their muscles relax and further prevent pain from setting in.
It’s priced amazingly affordably, especially considering that it’s a premium ergonomic pillow. I’ve seen standard, run of the mill memory foam pillows retail for more than twice the price of the Elviros, so I gave it an 8.5 out of 10 for value. It really is a great deal!
It’s very durable and features a removable outer cover that can go in the washing machine, which is always a plus. You can’t wash memory foam itself (or at least it’s extremely not recommended to wash memory foam itself), so a washable cover is a must-have to keep things clean and sanitary.
You most likely won’t be using a pillowcase, so it’s nice that the cover is made of a breathable and attractive material. It even comes in a cool light blue or a muted gray color, so it can be a statement piece if desired! It’s designed to meet the needs of just about every type of sleeper, so it gets a 9.1 out of 10 for durability and ease of use.
This pillow gets great reviews, even from stomach sleepers, so it earns an 8.9 out of 10 for customer impressions. People did mention that it took a few days of adjustment (and some even reported feeling slightly more painful during this adjustment period) but after that it greatly improved most people’s sleep. A few did mention that it has a strong smell, which is typical of memory foam pillows and dissipates over time.

What are cervical pillows?
The spine is divided into several anatomic sections with the neck being referred to as the cervical spine. Cervical pillows are specifically designed to support this portion of the spine as it is often the one causing sleep issues.
Unlike traditional pillows, which are a relatively uniform thickness and shape, cervical pillows cradle the head and neck in an ergonomic way. They work for side sleepers, back sleepers, and even stomach sleepers in most cases.
Whereas a normal pillow puts pressure on the back of the head (often concentrated at just one point on the back of the head), cervical pillows evenly spread the weight of the head and neck across a supportive surface. This can virtually eliminate pressure points and puts your neck at a much more natural angle relative to the rest of the spine.
Are cervical pillows good for sleep and the spine?
Many chiropractors, sleep specialists, and even doctors recommend switching out your boring old regular pillow for a cervical neck pillow. Even if you don’t suffer from pain or sleep issues, these put your body in a more natural recumbent position (a fancy way of saying “laying down”) and can help you avoid or mitigate chronic pain.
These pillows are a more modern take on the classic “neck pillow”, which closely resembles a sausage or log. While these to support the neck, they’re not exactly great when it comes to supporting the rest of the head. Since the head and neck are (obviously) connected, this can lead to some uncomfortable sleeping positions.
Cervical pillows are better than the older neck pillows because they are designed with the entire spine in mind. They place both the head and neck in an ergonomically correct position which should align the entire spine comfortably. They even work if you sleep on your stomach, something that can’t really be said for the old log pillows.
Are memory foam pillows good for the neck?
Memory foam pillows usually work well for neck pain sufferers since they contour so well to the curves of the head and neck, creating an ergonomic and comfortable sleeping experience. The “memory” in memory foam comes from the fact that the pillows can be molded into a different shape by the weight and heat of your body but then spring back to their original shape when not in use.
Since these pillows come in all different shapes and sizes, there is definitely one out there for every body type and every type of sleep situation. According to Harvard Health, it’s recommended that the neck be slightly more elevated than the head, which is why you’ll usually find that these pillows are designed with a slight contour. This contour cradles the head comfortable and keeps the neck in the correct position all night long.
How should I sleep to avoid neck pain?
As mentioned above, it’s generally recommended to have the neck at a higher position than the head in order to keep things aligned properly. This is true even if you don’t have neck pain, and it remains true no matter what position you usually sleep in.
Unfortunately for stomach sleepers, though, they don’t have an ideal way to elevate the neck. Placing a thick pillow under their neck would put pressure on the throat, which isn’t recommended for obvious reasons.
If at all possible, Harvard Health recommends that stomach sleepers try to find another way to get comfortable. They do concede that since sleep habits are often formed very early on in life that this may not be entirely possible for everyone. Still, it’s worth a shot if it means avoiding chronic pain!
If you’re able to sleep on your side or back, you’re in luck. Those are both optimal for neck comfort, and it’s easy to find pillows that work well for you! You can either combine a thicker and thinner pillow to elevate your neck or buy one that is specially made to do this, such as a memory foam pillow.
